  1. Get familiar with the meter: Ask your vet to watch you take your first reading so they can correct technique if needed.

Stable, established control (after month 3): Twice weekly spot checks plus one full curve every 4-8 weeks, or continuous monitoring with a sensor if preferred.

The goal isn't to obsess over single readings — it's to see the pattern. One high reading at breakfast doesn't mean the insulin is wrong; a pattern of highs at breakfast does.

What does a normal pattern look like?

For a pet on twice-daily insulin:

  • Pre-breakfast reading: Usually moderate (often 150-250 mg/dL for a stably controlled dog; cats vary more)
  • 2-3 hours post-injection: Glucose should be dropping
  • Nadir (lowest point): Usually 4-6 hours after injection — ideally in a target range your vet sets
  • Pre-evening meal: Glucose rising again as the insulin wears off

Wide swings, frequent lows, or consistently high readings warrant a vet call — especially if you see repeated readings under 70 mg/dL (hypoglycaemia).

Stress and glucose: the cat effect

Cats especially show marked stress hyperglycaemia — their glucose shoots up when anxious. A cat stressed at the vet clinic might read 350 mg/dL; the same cat at home, relaxed, might be 180 mg/dL. Increasingly high readings week on week: Classic sign that the body is becoming more resistant or that something in routine has changed (food, activity level, stress, other illness). This warrants a vet call and possible insulin adjustment.

Readings that swing wildly day to day: Often environmental (stress, activity variation, food inconsistency). Focus on consistency: same injection time, same food time, same calm routine. Once routine stabilises, you'll see patterns emerge.

Readings that are "in range" but your pet is sluggish: Sometimes the number looks fine but your pet's behaviour says otherwise. Trust what you see — lethargy, excessive thirst, or appetite changes alongside numbers warrant a vet check regardless of what the glucose reads.

Common monitoring mistakes and how to avoid them

Testing at different times each day: This makes pattern spotting impossible. Stick to the same time(s) daily so your vet can compare apples to apples. If you need to shift testing time, give it 3-5 days at the new time before interpreting the pattern.

Reusing lancets: Lancets dull quickly; a dull lancet hurts more and may not produce enough blood, forcing an extra prick. Fresh lancet every time.

Over-interpreting one high or low reading: One high reading after a stressful car ride doesn't mean the insulin is wrong. One low after unexpected exercise doesn't mean the dose is too high. Patterns matter; outliers are usually explainable.

Not writing down context: "High reading" is data. "High reading after skipping breakfast" is information. Always log what was different if a reading is unexpected.

Changing insulin timing or dose based on your own curve reading: You can build curves and spot patterns, but never adjust insulin without your vet. You lack the full clinical picture. Share your observations, let your vet decide.

Free-feeding or irregular meals: Insulin is timed to food. If your pet grazes all day, the insulin-food mismatch destabilises glucose. Scheduled meals are crucial.

Home monitoring beyond the meter: other clues

Glucose numbers are one part of the picture. Your daily observations matter too:

  • Urine and water intake: Excess glucose spills into urine and pulls water with it. Less urination and drinking usually means better control. More can indicate trouble — call your vet.
  • Body weight: Gradual weight gain or loss over weeks can signal changing insulin needs or dietary change.
  • Energy and alertness: Diabetic pets often feel better as control improves. If your pet is increasingly lethargic, that's a sign even if glucose numbers seem OK.
  • Appetite: Changes in hunger (suddenly eating more or much less) can signal a problem or dietary change is needed.
  • Coat quality: This takes weeks but often improves with good diabetes control — a sign the body is healthier overall.

Your meter is a tool — treat it well:

  • Store at room temperature: Don't leave it in a hot car or on a freezing windowsill.
  • Protect the screen: A cracked display makes readings unreliable.
  • Replace test strips on schedule: Strips degrade if exposed to humidity or heat. Opened vials should be discarded within 3 months; check your manufacturer's guidance.
  • Use the same meter consistently: If your vet also uses a meter, compare readings on the same meter both ways. Different meters sometimes read slightly differently — good to know for context.

Building a glucose-tracking habit that lasts

Most owners find home monitoring becomes routine within 2-3 weeks. Here's how to make it stick:

Make it easy: Keep your meter, strips, and lancets in the same accessible spot. If you're digging through cabinets to find supplies, you're less likely to test.

Tie it to an existing routine: Test right before breakfast, right before you give the evening injection. Anchor it to something you already do daily.
